The Almaz program was a highly secret Soviet military space station program, initiated in 1964 by Vladimir Chelomey at the OKB-52 design bureau. It was developed as a counterpart to the U.S. Air Force's Manned Orbiting Laboratory (MOL) project, which had been formally approved in December 1963, before Almaz's initiation. Three stations were launched between 1973 and 1976: Salyut 2, Salyut 3, and Salyut 5, though they were publicly designated as civilian Salyut space stations to cover their military nature. However, Salyut 2 failed shortly after launch and was never crewed; only Salyut 3 and Salyut 5 were successfully crewed. The program is significant as the only known armed, crewed military spacecraft ever flown, and its heritage continues through the TKS spacecraft, not directly through the International Space Station module Zarya.

Initial plans called for launching the OPS and a VA return craft together on a Proton rocket, with crew accessing the station through a hatch in the VA's heat shield, but delays in man-rating the VA and Proton led to crews being launched separately via Soyuz spacecraft.
