Aurora programme

ESA's long-term plan for Solar System exploration.

The Aurora programme (also called the Aurora Exploration Programme or simply Exploration Programme) was a human spaceflight programme of the European Space Agency (ESA), formally approved by the ESA Council in November 2001 and officially beginning in 2002. Its objective was to formulate and implement a European long-term plan for exploring the Solar System using robotic spacecraft and human spaceflight, focusing on bodies that may hold traces of life beyond Earth. The programme is no longer active; its ExoMars mission and long-term deep-space human spaceflight ambitions were taken over by the Terrae Novae programme, established in 2016.

The Aurora programme was a response to Europe's Strategy for space, endorsed by the European Union Council of Research and the ESA Council. That strategy had three main points: explore the solar system and the Universe, stimulate new technology, and inspire young Europeans in science and technology. A foundational principle of Aurora was recognizing the interdependence of technology and exploration.

Member states committed to participation for five-year periods, after which they could change their level of participation or pull out entirely. The programme planned flagship missions and arrow missions for key technology demonstrations, such as an Earth re-entry vehicle and a Mars aerocapture demonstrator. Although human spaceflight remained a long-term goal beyond 2030, the thrust was on implementing the ExoMars mission and preparing for an international Mars sample return mission.

The only mission launched under Aurora was the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter and Schiaparelli lander, an uncrewed Mars orbiter and lander launched jointly with Russia's Roscosmos in 2016 on a Proton rocket with Fregat upper stage. Other flagship missions considered included the Rosalind Franklin rover (originally part of the Aurora programme's ExoMars mission before cooperation was cancelled in 2022 after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, launch scheduled for 2028 under Terrae Novae), a robotic Mars sample return mission by the mid-2020s, and a human space mission as a long-term goal with no fixed date. No arrow mission was launched.
