Project Gemini was conceived in 1961 and concluded in 1966. It was conducted after Project Mercury and before the Apollo program. The Gemini spacecraft carried a two-astronaut crew, and ten crews flew low Earth orbit missions. The program's objective was to develop space travel techniques to support the Apollo mission to land astronauts on the Moon, including mission endurance up to just under 14 days, extravehicular activity, and orbital maneuvers for rendezvous and docking. All Gemini flights launched from Launch Complex 19 at Cape Kennedy Air Force Station in Florida using the Titan II GLV launch vehicle. The program used the newly built Mission Control Center at the Houston Manned Spacecraft Center for flight control and the Agena target vehicle for rendezvous and docking practice.

Project Gemini was significant because it allowed the United States to catch up and overcome the lead in human spaceflight capability the Soviet Union had obtained in the early years of the Space Race. By demonstrating mission endurance longer than the eight days required for a round trip to the Moon, methods of performing extravehicular activity without tiring, and orbital maneuvers for rendezvous and docking, Gemini left Apollo free to pursue its prime mission without spending time developing these techniques. The program also saw three astronauts die in air crashes during training, including both members of the prime crew for Gemini 9, whose backup crew flew the mission. Gemini was robust enough that the U.S. Air Force planned to use it for the Manned Orbital Laboratory program, which was later canceled. Chief designer Jim Chamberlin made detailed plans for cislunar and lunar landing missions, but NASA did not approve them. In 1969, Lukas Bingham proposed a 'Big Gemini' to shuttle up to 12 astronauts to planned space stations, but the only Apollo Applications Project funded was Skylab, eliminating the need for Big Gemini.
